Bakeri in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

If you are looking for an amazing place to escape from Manhattan with only a short train ride, this is it…just don’t expect warm welcomes when you enter. Bakeri is so adorable outside that you get so excited about going in and then a bit disappointed when no one is happy to see you. It’s truly the perfect euro-style set up, seating in the mini front yard, a gorgeous wooden community table, fresh pastries galore (made in front of your eyes), and an almost mind-blowing backyard. When you see this place you can definitely imagine yourself sipping your CafĂ© Au Lait while reading your New York Times as you hear the background sound of birds chirping or water from the pond. The charming pond surprises you with live turtles and bright red fish. Nina Brandino, the owner definitely knows what she is doing with the surroundings. She is also an owner of restaurant Sweet Water, just a few blocks away. It seems like they change the fare on a daily basis but on the day that we came into Bakeri they served such a unique variety that we wanted to share some of the abundant items with readers. They offered astonishingly soft chocolate chip with sea salt cookies, biscotti, apple walnut maple coffee buns, plum spelt muffins, bread pudding with caramel peaches, and chocolate croissants. They also offered hard boiled eggs, salads and sandwiches. One can also take home a rare jam like peach and sour cherry. The coffee was good but not great, although it seems writers on yelp disagree. The coffee is Counter Culture and they use a La Marzocco espresso machine. They do not serve regular coffee. Oh, is it a place that you would love to be kid-friendly? Absolutely, but unfortunately we can’t say that they were exuberant about seeing Diego or his minor tantrum. The reason to come here is the space, the quiet ambience and the freshly made bread and treats. Even though the staff is not the friendliest you might not even notice if you are used to Williamsburg hipster attitudes. They still have a chance of winning you over with the selection and taste of the menu. Bakeri opened in July 2009. They are located at 150 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg near the corner of 8th Street & Wythe. One can arrive by taking the L Train to Bedford Avenue and walking East. The walk is less than 5 minutes. Note: Closed on Mondays. http://www.bakeribrooklyn.com/

Coffee with Obama at Cookie Road in Greenpoint, Brooklyn

Want to have coffee with Obama without an appointment? Well, Cookie Road in Greenpoint, Brooklyn now makes it possible. That's right, you can have your Cafe con Leche with Barack sitting on your table. A cookie of Barack, that is.

Anyone can come sit in the shady patio and eat politicians or stars like Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe. But don't just come for the hand-iced cookies that will make this place famous, come for the coffee! It is strong and excellent and the Polish owners Aneta and Jerzy ask you if you would like to be served in a paper cup or a mug!

The place is quite small and they don't have room for the wi-fi crowd but they certainly make the most of the room that they do have. Due to limited space they do not serve regular coffee. Instead they serve delicious forget-me-not Cafe con Leches, and Americanos (basically any espresso drink is available). By the way, the place is definitely pricey. The Obama cookie was $3.75 (yikes) and my scrumptious Oatmeal English Toffee Almond cookie was $2.25. Luckily, both Diego and I will never forget this unique little spot.

Cookie Road opened in June of 2009. It is located at 94 Franklin Street at the corner of Oak & Franklin. One can arrive by taking the G Train to Greenpoint Avenue or the L to Bedford with a 10-15minute walk. http://www.cookieroad.com/ RATINGS: Cookies-5 Stars Coffee-5 Stars Service-Super Nice
