Super Cute Quick Cup

CUP is amazing for a nice weather morning walk.  Diego and I were getting kicked out of our apartment by my husband and his cast because they were going to be rehearsing, so Diego and I decided that we would go on a walk and do our regular blog visit.  D rode his two-wheeler and I ran after him trying to keep up.

We decided to visit CUP on the way to the playground.  When we arrived it was way too crowded for a quick pick-up but we waited anyway.  There were so many people in line that I asked the owner Briana if this was how it always was on Sundays. She said, “no,” and then informed me that one of the staff called in sick.  Diego became impatient because the space was small and he was determined to get to the playground, so he yelled, “Cup is BORING!”  I quickly got upset, got over it and grabbed whatever pastry looked yummy enough for D to devour.

As we ate our Walnut Cinnamon roll outside I taught D a thing or two about the word “boring.”  He had recently lost gym time for using this word at school so I had already thought about how to explain how it was not a bad word but kind of rude.   The coffee was mediocre, granted I ordered a regular coffee.   However, the Walnut Cinnamon roll was awesome!   Diego did not want to try it because he saw walnuts in it but in the end we fought over who had the last bite (he won).  They had a small selection of pastries to choose from because they are a “quick-stop” type of place.

The place is super green, super small, and super cute with a table for art books, shelves of reading material (although there are no kid books so bring your own if you want to hang for longer than 1 minute with a child), window seats and a ton of sunlight.   All in all, this is a great place read yourtoddler a book, swig your coffee, and then run to the nearest playground all before 9am!

CUP is located at 978 Lorimer Street (entrance on Norman Ave.) in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  One can arrive quickly by taking the G Train to Nassau.  CUP is feet away from the Nassau exit.   For more info visit: http://www.cuponnorman.com

Computer Cafe with Kids, Really?

The Flying Saucer Café automatically wins the award for “perfect place for bloggers” and it falls terribly close to winning “the perfect coffee shop for people with kids”. The only reason it does not win the second award is because the coffee shop that still holds that place is Mamalú Cafe. It is not around anymore but until someone else makes a place like that for parents, Diego and I have decided not to give that award to anyone (Mamalú used to be a Williamsburg coffee shop that had a comfortable but chic lounge area full of awesome artwork plus a spacious spotless room for kids to run around. It was amazing but unfortunately, it is no longer in business.)

How is it possible that Flying Saucer Café is perfect for bloggers and kids? This cafe makes it work because it is set up like a living room with comfy couches, wooden toys and tons of tables for writers, plus a backyard full of trees. Some parents might see the main table area as a hazard for kids because a lot of wires line the floor or perhaps it’s a positive because that means they can jump on their own computer while they give their little one chalk to draw near the banquet chalkboards. My precocious Diego would never take advantage of this space without my constant aided play but others might do well and relax in this cozy spacious environment.

The staff was super nice and welcoming as they brought our food to our table and my Hazelnut Mocha was pretty good (they serve Gorilla Coffee). Diego was mad because there was not a good selection of sugary items. They did however have good food options for little ones like bagels and grilled cheese sandwiches.

The Flying Saucer Café is located at 494 Atlantic Avenue between 3rd Avenue & Nevins Street in Boerum Hill. One can arrive by taking the G Train to Fulton, 2, 3, 4, 5, M, N, Q, W, R, B, D to Atlantic Ave-Pacific Street.

Coffeed Out by Nightmare: Vampires

We apologize for not posting something in a while. We have not left; we have just been swamped by Nightmare: Vampires. Every fall our life turns into nothing but hard work, stress, and running around to help our dad, Timothy Haskell build a huge Haunted House in the city. We are currently doing nothing else but eating, sleeping and breathing Nightmare: Vampires. For those of you who are too scared to go through you can now go on a “non-scary” day with a kid on Kid’s Day on October 24th from 10-3pm. You will be on a walk-through tour looking for the red-velvet cupcake that Dracula has stolen from the Museum of Vampires. Kid’s Day at Nightmare: Vampires takes place at 623 Broadway (enter at Mercer) in Manhattan. For more info please visit http://www.hauntedhousenyc.com/kids-day.php We will make our next regular coffee post this coming week.
